Academic, policy, and technical work

Most of my work has focused on scholarly books and articles, so they each have their own pages:

General editorial work — manuscript editing, web content creation, etc.

  • Undercurrent (the Canadian undergraduate journal of development studies): I was editor-in-chief from September 2007-September 2008. My duties included sourcing submissions, leading the editorial board and associate editors, reviewing and editing manuscripts, creating and maintaining website content, and coordinating print production and sales. I also coordinated rebranding and journal cover content with design partner, Ballyhoo Media, and created a style guide for future staff use

Editing and proofreading technical documents

  • Decker Intellectual Properties: ongoing proofreading of medical articles for Scientific American’s resource databases, specifically covering the areas of nutrition, emergency medicine, vascular and endovascular surgery, and psychiatry
  • The Co-operators: copy and stylistic editing of product manuals and user guides, as well as the company intranet and bilingual business support material
  • William Nycum & Associates Ltd.: copy edited architectural specifications and created company’s specification style guide

Thesis proofreading

  • I have edited and proofread countless theses and essays; these ranged from the undergraduate to PhD level and spanned topically from architecture and philosophy to international development, economics, anthropology, and political science

Style guide creation

I’ve created style guides for:

Content writing / editing – policy and fundraising

  • The 519 Church Street Community Centre:
    • edited “Still Here, Still Queer: A Handbook for Affirming LGBTQ Older Adults,” a 2017 guide showcasing The 519’s programming for elder community members
    • edited “Creating Authentic Spaces: Fostering environments that are inclusive of gender identity and gender expression,” a 2015 workplace manual, for distribution across the Greater Toronto Area, to support the inclusion of trans and gender non-conforming people
  • Guelph Resource Centre for Gender Empowerment and Diversity (GRCGED): voluntary policy writing and document editing for the Peer and Crisis Support Program; grant writing for program fundraising
  • Tammy Ratcliff (Guelph-based printmaker): grant writing support for arts funding
